Athletic Dept., Teams Honored for Charitable Efforts

March 11, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

The Smithtown CSD Athletics Department won third place in the W20 Foundation’s Project Team Up 4 Community annual Holiday Heroes Challenge. The organization lauded the Smithtown Athletics Department for its commitment to making an impact in the community during the 2014-15 school year.

“Their community service work is commendable,” said the W20 Foundation’s Project Team Up 4 Community on its website. “They have done many projects that include raising funds and awareness for cancer research, to feeding the hungry and homeless on Long Island. Their projects clearly demonstrate the passion they have to making a difference in the lives of others…We thank Smithtown for assisting the W20 Foundation to deliver this impactful program in and all around our Long Island communities. We recognize athletes and organizations like theirs as our partners in achieving our goal.”
Several Smithtown athletic teams volunteered their time and made various donations to community service causes for local food pantries, shelters, cancer awareness causes and the like.

Representatives from W20 Foundation’s Project Team Up 4 Community attended a recent Smithtown Board of Education meeting to present Patrick Smith, coordinator of physical education, athletics, health and nurses, with a $500 grant for their community service efforts. NBTY’s Helping Hands program is the corporate sponsor of the grant. Many of the coaches whose teams were involved in community service efforts were present to share in the celebration. Smithtown CSD has chosen to donate the $500 to a number of selected charitable organizations.

Elwood Volleys for a Cause

March 11, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

More than 300 students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School gathered on Feb. 27 for the school’s annual Volleyball-a-thon. The event represents one of the largest high school fundraisers of the year with all proceeds going to benefiting the Tom Cutinella Scholarship Fund, American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund. Each student contributed $10 to participate in the Volleyball-a-thon, which included a variety of snacks and drinks donated by parents and local business. Student teams creatively named themselves, dressed in matching T-shirts and took to the courts.

Fifty-three teams battled against one another on the volleyball court for the ultimate bragging rights of Volleyball-a-thon champs. In the end, the team that walked away with the title was “School Survival Guide,” but the true champions were the students who came together and raised a total of $3,699 for the three causes determined by the student council members.

The Elwood Union Free School District thanks all who participated and donated to this wonderful event.

Women’s Basketball Team Supports “A Million Thanks” Organization

March 10, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women’s basketball team spent time earlier this week assisting with support for the “A Million Thanks” organization, which coordinates a year-round campaign to show our appreciation for our U.S. Military Men and Women, past and present, for their sacrifices, dedication, and service to our country through our letters, emails, cards, and prayers.

This event is just one example of many community outreach events that SCSU student-athletes will take part in as part of the Tim Greer Insurance Agency Community Service Cup.

Initiated in September, 2008, the ‘Community Service Cup’ program provides a competitive format that allows student-athletes to gain an enriched experience through engagement with the on-campus and local communities by supporting ventures of traditional citizens, campus community members and peer students and student-athletes. SCSU student-athletes volunteered more than 4,000 hours of their time to numerous outreach efforts, both on-campus and in Greater New Haven, during the 2013-14 academic year.

The organization aims to find pediatric cancer treatments that work without robbing

children of their childhood. The life of “SuperTy” was honored and celebrated at the event, while students competed in tug o’war, relay races, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and a skit competition, all in the name of fundraising. In the end, the senior class took home the win in fundraising and for the event. The Student Organization

and Key Club thank and congratulate Senior Class President and Key Club member, Augie Cavallaro who fundraised $5,000 for SuperTy. Augie has been the top fundraiser for Battle of the Classes, Battling for a Cause for the past 4 years and has fundraised over $18,000 in total.”
